Banana & Olive Oil Mask for Damaged Hair
This homemade hair mask recipe made from bananas and olive oil soothes hair damaged from chemical processing, hair tools and sun exposure.
Anyone who has had a chemical processing done to their hair (think perms, hair straightening or hair coloring) may have damaged hair that need protecting. The same goes for women who frequently use hair tools (flat irons, curling irons or blow dryers). Bananas are rich in tryptophan, an essential amino acid that can help strengthen hair, and potassium, a mineral which helps hair maintain a healthy pH balance.
What I love most about this hair mask is that it includes ingredients many of us have in our homes. No need to order any items off of Amazon or head out to the local health food store. Keep in mind you can keep bananas in the freezer to use for your weekly hair masks.
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil or argan oil
- a shower cap
Preparation
Put ingredients in a blender and blend until combined into a paste.
Add a dash of flour if paste is too runny.
Separate hair into 3-5 sections.
Apply mask to each section from roots to ends.
Wind hair into a loose bun if long and place a shower cap over hair. Keep it on for 30 minutes and then rinse out, shampooing and conditioning as usual.
Milk and Honey Mask for Damaged Hair
Milk and honey work wonders on brittle, damaged hair that tends to be thin and easily weighed down by heavy conditioners and oil treatments. This recipe uses both of those ingredients to restore your hair's vitality.
Ingredients
Use cream if you have coarse hair, low-fat skim milk if you have fine hair, and whole milk if you have normal hair. If you use low-fat milk, add 1 teaspoon flour to thicken the mask or it won't stay in your hair.
- 2 cups milk
- 2 teaspoons honey
How to Use It
- Warm up milk in the microwave so it's not too hot to the touch.
- Add the honey (and flour, if using) and stir until it's fully dissolved.
- Pour over dry hair, massaging it in to ensure every strand is covered.
- Place a shower cap over your hair and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Rinse it out and shampoo as normal.
Egg and Mayonnaise Hair Mask
-
The ultimate hair mask may be waiting in your refrigerator. A mask made with nothing more than egg yolks and mayonnaise can instantly de-frizz damaged hair. The recipe is so simple, that there's no reason why you shouldn't give it a shot.
Ingredients
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
If you have a lot of hair, you may need to double this.
How to Use It
- Separate the yolks of 2 eggs from their whites.
- Whisk the yolks with 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise.
- Place the mask on the bottom 2/3 of dry or damp hair.
- Put a shower cap over your head and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing out.
Avocado and Olive Oil Hair Mask
Avocados are incredibly moisturizing to damaged hair. When the fruit is combined with olive oil, it makes an incredible hair mask. This one is best when left on for a half hour, so prepare a cup of tea or enjoy your favorite relaxing activity while you wait.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe avocado
- 1–2 teaspoons olive oil
How to Use It
If you have oily hair, don't apply the mixture to your scalp, crown, or to the first couple inches of your roots. It will only increase the oils.
- Mash up an avocado with 1 or 2 tablespoons olive oil.
- Separate dry hair into four sections (two up, two down).
- Use a pastry brush to apply the mixture to each section of hair, starting at the bottom. You might need to have a friend help with this process.
- Once the entire head is covered, put on a shower cap and wait for 30 minutes.
- Rinse in the shower and shampoo using a mild shampoo. Finish by conditioning your hair lightly.
